Turning Carbon Into Gold: The Future of CCUS Technology

The expert session on Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) will address critical challenges in decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors while advancing sustainable energy transitions. The session positions CCUS as a transformative solution for mitigating emissions, facilitating industrial decarbonization, and achieving negative emissions through bioenergy or direct air capture. By leveraging expert panels, roundtable discussions, and audience engagement, it will explore barriers, opportunities, and policy frameworks to accelerate CCUS deployment in Denmark and Europe.

CCUS is a cornerstone technology for achieving global climate goals, particularly in decarbonizing sectors where emissions are difficult to eliminate through traditional means. By capturing and storing CO₂, CCUS can significantly reduce industrial emissions, complement renewable energy systems, and support carbon removal strategies. Its importance is underscored by the EU’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and Denmark’s leadership in green innovation.

However, despite its potential, CCUS faces economic, technical, regulatory, and societal challenges that hinder widespread adoption. Addressing these barriers is critical to unlocking its full potential as part of the energy transition. This session provides a unique platform to foster collaboration among researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and students, ensuring a holistic approach to scaling CCUS technologies and aligning them with Europe’s climate and energy goals.
